March Madness, provided the 2017-2018 Collegiate basketball season with more madness than usual. History was made with the University of Maryland Baltimore County (the overall last seed) defeating the University of Virginia (the overall top seed) to become the first 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed by a score of 74-54. Other notable upsets in the first round included 13 seed Buffalo’s manhandling of 4 seed Arizona 89-68, 11 seed Loyola-Chicago’s thrilling victory over Miami 64-62, 13 seed Marshall defeating 4 seed Wichita State 81-75, 10 seed Butler beating 7 seed Arkansas 79-62, and 11 Syracuse defeating 6 seed TCU 57-52. The round of 32 began the day after the round of 64 had ended. Notable upsets included, Loyola Chicago upsetting 3 seed Tennessee on another buzzer beater 63-62, 7 seed Nevada defeating 2 seed Cincinnati 75-73, 7 seed Texas A&M manhandling 2 seed North Carolina 86-65, 11 seed Syracuse upsets 3 seed Michigan State 55-53, and 5 seed Clemson shellacking 4 seed Clemson 84-53. 16 seed UMCB lost a heartbreaker to 9 seed Kansas State and end their run as the first 16 seed in the second round. The Sweet Sixteen was set with matchups of 9 seed Kansas State vs. 5 seed Kentucky. 11 seed Loyola Chicago vs. 7 seed Nevada, 9 seed Florida State vs. 4 seed Gonzaga, 3 seed Michigan vs. 7 seed Texas A&M, 1 seed Villanova vs. 5 seed West Virginia, 3 seed Texas Tech vs. 2 seed Purdue, 1 seed Kansas vs 5 seed Clemson, and 11 seed Syracuse vs. 2 seed Duke. The two Cinderella teams, Kansas State and Loyola Chicago both Upset their opponents 61-58 over Kentucky and 69-68 over Nevada respectively to set up and Elite Eight Matchup between the two. Florida State upset Gonzaga 75-60 to highlight a matchup against Michigan, who defeated Texas A&M 99-72. Villanova defeated West Virginia 90-78, while Texas Tech upset Purdue 78-65. Last but not least, Kansas defeated Clemson 80-76 while Duke ended Syracuse’s run with a 69-65 beating. The Elite Eight featured Kansas State vs. Loyola Chicago, Florida State vs. Michigan, Villanova vs. Texas Tech, and Kansas vs. Duke. Loyola Chicago’s Cinderella run would continue into the schools first Final Four since 1963 by defeating Kansas State 78-62, Michigan handled Florida State 58-54, Villanova overpowered Texas Tech 71-59, and Kansas defeated Duke 85-81. The Final Four took place in San Antonio Texas, featuring the regional Champions, Loyola Chicago vs. Michigan, and college basketball blue bloods Kansas vs. Villanova. Loyola Chicago’s Cinderella run came to a bitter end when they were out-gunned by Michigan 69-57. Villanova and Kansas had a similar matchup getting blown out 95-79. This setup a championship game of 3 seed Michigan vs. 1 seed Villanova. After a hard fought game the Villanova Wildcats are the 2017-2018 NCAA college basketball National Champions! They won their second title in the past 3 years and seem to be setup to dominate college basketball for the near future.
