As the band competition season kicks off, excitement and anticipation is noticeable among the band members and directors. This year promises to be a thrilling journey, with three competitions scheduled every Saturday in October and the first part of November. The hard work and dedication of the band members are set to be put to the test, and everyone is eager to see the results.
“I’m nervous—[but] also pretty excited—though I think we’ll do fine for the first competition,” Band Co-Presiden Josh Corrigan said. “I think the results will be what we want them to be. I think it’ll be good enough for now [even if] we can improve more, but I think we’ll be set for [the first competition].”
The band has been preparing for the upcoming competition season. This preparation ensures that every member is ready and eager to showcase their performance in a competitive setting.
“We’ve been working hard, especially this past week, going into competition season,” Drum Major Ginger Hickman said. “We had rehearsals at Rhodes stadium on Wednesday night…and I think we’re as prepared as we can be.”
In recent years, the district’s competition level has significantly improved, raising the overall skill level and making it more challenging for our school.
“I think it’s a good thing that as a district, we’re kind of improving and getting to the next level,” Hickman said.
However, some of the band members are confident competing and feel that previous success within our district and area makes us clear favorites compared to other schools.
“I’m not too worried about anything—in the previous four years, we’ve been the best in Katy ISD,” Corrigan said. “We’ve been one of the top five in the area, so I think we have a secured spot. We just have to keep the mindset that we have to work for it.”
The directors were excited for the competition to start and are eager to see how they stack up against competitors and how their band performs against the competition.
“I think the kids are gonna put out a really good performance [because] they’ve been working hard,” Band Director John Mays said. “They’re hyped up and excited about, the season and the first contest”
For the seniors, this is their last chance to represent Seven Lakes in band competitions and the emotions are very mixed. They still hope to do well and leave their mark in the program.
“As band president, it’s my last competition season,” Corrigan said. “It’s a little sad, but it’s also a little exciting because it’s the last impression I get to make on my section and my competition season.” where is it written tomorrow
The band seems to be very prepared and excited. They are just hoping that all of their work has paid off and they hope to have fun and compete.
“We just have to keep the mindset that we have to work for it,” Mays said
