Competing In Clubs

Taking a look into the competitions for HOSA and FBLA

Although Seven Lakes is home to a multitude of clubs, not all clubs are created equally when it comes to their activities. While some clubs serve as a place for students to come together and bond over a shared passion such as the yoga club or bowling club, others, like FBLA and HOSA offer the students chances not only to build relationships but to compete in various events.

HOSA:

On Jan 12, our school sent over 20 competitors to the Spring Leadership Conference (SLC) for Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). SLC is a significant event in the HOSA calendar as it determines who will advance to the State Competition. The diverse range of competitions include research posters, forensics, and mental health promotion. Junior Lucas Beckford, who engaged in the mental health promotion category, attested to the enriching experience.

“HOSA and its competitions have helped me in multiple aspects of healthcare and competition day was a lot of fun,” Beckford said.

The dedication and excellence displayed by our students have resulted in a school record of 17 state qualifiers, a remarkable achievement that underscores the commitment to fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals at Seven Lakes High School.

FBLA:

FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)  is a highly demanding club, requiring preparation, research, referencing past projects, and interviewing business professionals. Competition categories include accounting, public speaking, social media strategies, sales presentation, and marketing.

“Depending on the event I’m participating in, prep for FBLA events sometimes starts months in advance,” club leader junior Archana Arangil said.

From the bus ride to the presentation, competition days are stressful. However, despite the pressure, participants appreciate the supportive FBLA community and the camaraderie among like-minded individuals. And the award ceremony, though time-consuming, serves as a rewarding conclusion. Participants value being part of FBLA, finding pride and motivation in the acknowledgment of their efforts.

“Even if it’s someone you’re competing against, everyone you meet is really friendly,” an FBLA student said.
