Navigating the monotony of high school can be a daunting task for just about anyone. So, when a good ‘ole rivalry presents itself, heads will turn, and attention is on high.
That was certainly the case when it came to the rivalry between AP English Language teacher Matt LeFevere and English II teacher Kevin Robinson. They met each other on their first day of teaching here, nearly a decade ago, and became fast friends. However, playing pranks on one another quickly became the forefront of their relationship. When asked about their friendship, both regarded the other with disdain, remembering the pranks that made each other so miserable; in fact, most could see plain as day that Mr. Robinson and Mr. LeFevre only shared a tentative camaraderie out of necessity and not at all out of actual enjoyment of each other’s company.
“We got along quickly early on that first six weeks… Our first day of work was when we met. We sat next to each other at orientation and sparks just flew… I knew he was the one,” Mr. LeFevre said.
Robinson added that they went to lunch together that day.
“… He was driving a Ford Explorer at the time, and I remember getting in his passenger seat and he was like, oh, just move that stuff. And I realized that he has kind of a messy passenger seat. And I was like, this is my guy.” Mr. Robinson said.
The two have been playing jokes on each other in a multitude of ways. One of their greatest feats being when Robinson tricked one of his classes into believing that they were supposed to to turn in permission slips for an upcoming hayride and sent them to Lefevre to get extra copies of said permission slip.
“I had a kid who was turning in a [homework] sheet…that they missed because they were absent. And one of my kids was like, ‘What did they just give you’? So, I was like, ‘oh, it was just a permission slip for the field trip’. [Immediately] everyone stopped talking and were like ‘a field trip, what field trip’? And I was like ‘yeah, didn’t anyone else get the field trip permission slip?’ Then the kid picked up on it and was like, ‘yeah, are you guys going on the field trip or not? So, I told them to go ask Lefevre if he had any more,” Mr. Robinson said.
LeFevre then filled in his side of the story as he described what happened when the student approached him asking for the elusive permission slip.
“… I yelled at the kid, I’m like, ‘yeah, tell your teacher if he’s not responsible enough to make copies for the entire class don’t expect me to make the copies,’” LeFevre said. “We roasted all the kids after that, like, you guys really want to go eight miles an hour sitting in hay? …That’s what you guys do for fun in Katy?’”
LeFevre and Robinson are also often known to play tricks and pranks on another teacher, Mrs. Gaden, but when asked about her, they said in confusion, “who’s she?” And later, they jokingly responded to a department group text bragging about a new sweater when she announced her pregnancy.
At the end of the day, it’s all lighthearted, as their banter helps lighten kids’ days and makes seemingly long days at Seven Lakes more bearable.
