The Way the Cookie Crumbles

Girl Scout Cookies For Sale in February

Every year during the month of February, the Girl Scouts have their annual cookie sales, selling in schools, in front of stores, public parks, and neighborhoods. Here at the school is no exception, and this month Girl Scouts are going all over the campus to sell cookies. There will be 266,000 boxes to sell all over the community that arrived in Katy on Friday, Feb. 3.

These Girl Scouts dedicate their time outside of school to learn new skills, lead the way, and give back to communities. They learn to take risks and trust their guts whenever it comes to teaming up with others and playing an important role in society. At this time of year, it is important for the Girl Scouts to give back and to also raise money to keep themselves in the industry.

“I guess it’s cool because like I’m not really good with talking to adults,” sophomore Anna Dibble said. “It’s helped me talk and engage more with them.”

To keep the Girl Scouts in business, it is important for them to advertise and to have good marketing and branding. Most of the time you see a Girl Scout selling cookies door to door with their uniform, and to get people to buy cookies they must have a good sales pitch on not just why they sell cookies, but what being a Girl Scout really is about. In order for these girls to advertise, they must promote not only the values of the Girl Scouts organization, but to promote their role helping young girls develop self-confidence and good-decision making.

“I think a lot of it is about learning how to be an entrepreneur, and learning to interact with people and sell the cookies,” senior Mary Behringer said. “When you’re younger, it’s more about learning money management, how to handle cookies and be more outgoing, to spread the Girl Scout message.”

Continuing their tradition, Girl Scout core cookie flavors sell for $5 a box, and the specialty cookies for $6 a box. The core flavors are Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Thin Mints, Lemon Ups, and Adventurefuls, and the specialty cookies are S’mores and Toffetastic. A lot of these cookies are sold at an alarming rate and are only out annually for people to purchase, but for a great cause the money used to buy cookies is put into a great cause for the Girl Scout Organization.

“Last year the fastest selling flavored cookie was the Adventurefuls,” Dibble said.

“What we’re trying to promote is part of the money from every box goes to supporting the Girl Scout camp so we go to all of the camps. All the land is donated, but all the money that we need to maintain them and pay our grand jurors who take care of the land,” Behringer said.

Without the Girl Scouts out there, we would not have these incredible girls inspiring others and selling cookies. Every person that buys their cookies every year has done a great cause for the Girl Scouts to continue to adventure, explore, and support our environment.
