Studio VII’s Comedy SportzTeam Prepares for the Upcoming Season

After coming off a monumental 2018-19 season, Studio VII’s ComedySportz team is looking to make this season the best one yet. They won third in the State, and first in the Houston area, and look to reciprocate last season’s success.

“After losing in the semifinals last November at State, the team knew that we weren’t accepting anything less than a win the next time we competed,” senior Jacob Aromy said. “So when it came time to compete for the Houston area championship, the team was firing on all cylinders.”

While competing in matches, the ComedySportz team participates in different games, trying to earn more points than their opponents.

“My absolute favorite games are ‘Dumbbell Races’ and ‘Dating Game,’” junior Juliana Dold said. “Both are character games which means you get the chance to create a whole new character that is completely unlike yourself.”

They have limited matches in the first semester, preparing for the bulk of the matches that come in the second semester. In November 2019, the team will travel to Grapevine, Texas to compete in the State competition.

“Unfortunately, we only have a few sporadic matches in the fall, but in the spring semester we have a math about every other week,” junior Jon Schulte said. “Tickets can be bought at the door or from a ComedySportz player a week before the matches.”

Although ComedySportz allows members to express their creativity, being a part of this team still comes with its many challenges.

“Being involved in both theatre and ComedySportz is both very helpful and difficult,” Dold said. “When an important test is coming up or I have a lot of homework, having to be out that late can get really stressful and overwhelming. Overall, it’s worth being on the team because being on the team is a great experience in working with other people in a way you’d never be able to outside of this program.”
