Yearbook staff hard at work

We don’t remember days, we remember moments and yearbooks keep them alive.

Room 1257 – the journalism room. Walking in, papers are scattered everywhere, students pop in to grab a camera out of the cabinet, and a faint smell of buttered popcorn lingers through the room. This chaotic scene is nothing new to the yearbook staff. Capturing the moments of the entire school year is hard work and especially during deadline time, things get a little crazy.

“My favorite part about yearbook is how close we all become. We’re like a big family and we learned how to work with each other,” senior Design Editor Daniela Ornelas said.

The staff spends countless hours shooting events, editing photos, writing captions, designing layouts, and proofing pages. It’s no wonder the yearbook room becomes a second home. Editors especially devote a lot of time to ensure the book not only comes out on time, but looks great.

“It’s really exciting when it first comes in because when we print out proofs it’s not as realistic but when you actually get to hold it, it’s surreal,” senior Events Editor Sophie Stinnett said.

“When the yearbooks arrive and you see them all together it feels really good. You realize all that hard work was worth it, we all managed to put something together very special that represents our school,” Ornelas said.

This year, the staff consists of 28 members, most of whom are first-year members.

“This year’s book is so unique because of all the cool ideas that the new staff members have contributed,” senior Photography Editor Sathya Raghavan said.

The student life section will feature the traditional spreads like summer vacation and Homecoming, but also include some fresh concepts. One spread features “Glow-Ups” of students who look drastically different than when they were children. Other pages highlight popular date ideas, hangouts, strange addictions, hidden talents, and more.

“The theme this year is ‘Capture the Moment’ and a big focus for the year is large, very high quality images to convey that theme,” first-year staffer sophomore Lizzie Heintz said. “They are a lot more dominant than in previous years. We’re focusing more on that than stories like they have in the past.”

One highly anticipated part of the yearbook reveal is the cover design. Last year, the student body raved about the plexi-glass and matte black cover and the staff worked diligently to create something equally as showstopping to highlight this year’s theme. The cover design will be revealed on Twitter @7Lyearbook on December 9.
